"In January, we received the first omens of Remote's third full-length album, when the band released the ex ante single "Гореть" (Russian: burn). And now here we are, listening to "Дым" (Russian: smoke), 45 minutes of sonic ashes, fire, and infernal soundscapes. As far as I can tell, "Дым" is the first album with Russian lyrics only by the band from Central Russian Kaluga.

On their newest work, Remote provide us with a brachial mix of atmospheric Post Metal, Black Metal-like coldness, and the slow but massive force of Sludge and Stoner Metal. Listening to "Дым", you can easily imagine a giant crack tearing apart Earth's soil, spawning eruptions that burn down every living being while an army of demons marches across the flaming planet. The album is a spicy titbit for fans of Dukatalon or early Electric Wizard."

"Hailing from Russia, Remote have been spewing out huge walls of gradually more extreme pitch-black pick ‘n’ mix sludge for nearly a decade. A quick look at the cover art for their third full-length, Дым (Smoke), complete with dragons, a bong, and demons shagging girls from behind, and you might think that this is another tiresome weed metal offering of dank grooves and bad stoner puns (couldn’t blame you, to be fair), but while there’s plenty of familiar sludge stylings to their sound, Remote have a unique talent for incorporating various other styles into their songs that steadily develop and progress.

As common as overbaked run of the mill red-eyed sludge bands are these days, it’s maybe nearly just as common to find bands that throw in shades of black metal, or a whiff of crust, or some other brief surprise to their standard riffage, but it can be a fine line between something coherent and a jumbled reaching mess. Remote manage to make it work because they’re great players with a skilful fluency that’s typically absent from the raw cacophony of sludge metal. Their core sound is like that of a spaced-out stoner doom band with real chops filtered through classic sludge that incorporates bits of everything heavy along the way.

Opening track Шлюха (Whore) spends the first few minutes conjuring a 90s Martian jam before the vocals rip the speakers open. As the song breaks down into a swinging groove, you start to hear the first examples of Remote’s song writing depth, or rather, their ability to present a familiar template then gradually pick it apart and then make it into something new.

A consistent thread throughout the album, Evgeny Kravchenko’s voice is something like Grief’s Jeff Hayward’s with the delivery of Iron Monkey’s Johnny Morrow – but with a Russian accent. I don’t have the lyrics to hand but judging from the band’s previous releases and the song titles here, their lyrics delve into the depths of vice and human fallibility through the lens of dark psychedelic metaphor.

The second track begins sounding something like a muddier Immolation, with the death metal portent expanding into a chrononautic pulsing before the staple of swampy riffs and wretched vocals. There’s a lot of little details going on within the riffs, expressive drum patterns and intriguing guitar flourishes, while the songs are packed with twists and turns. From tensely descending guitar, death growls and bulldozing bass, to a cool rhythmic sample of an anvil that brings an industrial tinge.

The relative technicality, rolling swing of the playing, and the ebb and flow of the writing – packed with ideas – makes me think of Taint. An underrated band that was ahead of their time who had too much going on for some heads that just wanted to bang or toke. And that may be something that puts you off Дым, because there’s a lot going on here and it’s maybe a little too much to take in at times.

After the first three tracks it seems like the band have established a discernible pattern of multiple slivers of doom, psych, hardcore, crust, death, black and the progressive spirit of post-punk which eventually give way to the almighty sludge combo of heavy riffs, pounding drums, and screeching vocals puking out noxious barbs of incomprehensible tar. But then track four, Пепел (Ash), throws everything out with nearly six minutes of noise, static, and stuttering toms. Clearly, Remote aren’t afraid to do exactly what they want, whether or not it all works for everyone. But none of the various elements are done badly and it seems like this band can do a convincing job of any heavy style.

Гореть (Ablaze) channels funeral doom melancholy into a thick mournful smog before things take a black metal turn, spawning a frenzied mash of raw extreme metal, with the vocals sounding particularly enraged before we’re led into something akin to ritualistic post-metal. For all the musical ground that’s covered, the band is at heart a heavy, grooving, sludge band. It’s angry and brutal, but it’s more rocking than despondent and strung out. Just check out the sneering rock ‘n’ roll attitude of the guitar solo on closing track Гравитация (Gravity).

If you’re just looking for something to smoke and headbang to, then it might be that this all sounds like a bit much. I don’t know if it all works, and some of the songs could maybe do with being a bit more focused, but whatever, if you like EyeHateGod, Grief, Iron Monkey, extreme metal, and bands that aren’t afraid to try out a bunch of different ideas, then you’ll find plenty to like here. My only real gripe is that I think the juvenile artwork sells the band short and gives the wrong impression of what they do, but again, whatever.

Remote has considerable talent and their innovative approach could break new ground in what has become a reliably stale and ever regurgitating sub-sub-genre. It would be great to see them take things even further. Excellent! (Отлично!)"

"Exploring human psychology thru sludge doom fusions - 75%

The front-cover artwork for this, the third album from Russian sludge doomsters Remote, might give the impression that these guys must be some obscure run-of-the-mill BM knock-off. Instead Remote are a trio who have been active since 2011 though I understand in recent years they have had a major line-up change with Pavel (Pasha) Stasev apparently leaving the band and being replaced by guitarist Sasha. On top of this the label Bad Road Records that issued Remote's first two albums has closed and "Дым" (pronounced "Dym", translating into English as "Smoke) has been issued by a new label which perhaps explains the changed and cheap-looking cliched artwork.

The actual music deserves a much better visual presentation than one that superficially references the album's explorations of the darker aspects of human psychology made possible by psychedelia and other means of dissolving our mental boundaries and restrictions. Remote's style is crushing mammoth sludge doom with a deep grinding edge, conjuring a vision of a humongous lava river rolling down a mountain and obliterating everything before it with sheer mass and incredible heat. Even birds above are not immune due to suffocation from toxic gases emanating from this river. At the same time this style of music is surprisingly flexible, accommodating elements of other genres and making them all its own. Sure enough, in opening track "Шлюха" ("Whore"), the music suddenly swells from heavy crumbling lava doom to fast-paced stoner rock groove and death-rattle black metal vocals. The song becomes melodic doom metal swankiness with steel riffs building on one another and the musicians jamming and trading crunchy licks and drum-rolls among themselves. After "Шлюха", the next couple of songs that follow continue building on the sludge doom foundation with elements and influences from hardcore, black metal, death metal, melodic thrash, industrial, psych rock and progressive rock, all emphasising distinct and catchy riffs with a hard-hitting edge and energetic instrumental jams where the musicians clearly enjoy one another's company and bounce ideas and motifs around continuously.

After three hard-hitting songs, listeners might expect more of the same in the album's second half but they will be surprised by "Пепел" ("Ash") which turns out to be nearly everything the rest of the album is not: an improvised frizzly noise ambient drone piece all done with minimal percussion and a light touch. The background bass drone and the sizzle help to anchor the track within the album so it doesn't come as a complete shock yet it elevates the album to another soundscape dimension so it isn't just straight-out psych sludge doom. "Пепел" doesn't linger for too long either, stopping when it has done all it needs to. From then on, we pass through funereal blackened death doom on "Гореть" ("Ablaze") which, for all its venom, has a feeling of "filler" after all that's come before it to the closer "Гравитация" ("Gravity"), a more spaced-out psych rocker than the rest of the album but still as brutal and grim and tough.

Up to and including "Пепел", I found the album very enjoyable, full of zest and energy. Experimenting with genres or elements of particular genres, good song-writing and plenty of room for break-out jamming or improvising in the same song is more the rule than the exception here. The last two tracks "Гореть" and "Гравитация" struggle with some of the album's earlier energy and liveliness lost, and their focus and momentum waver during the long instrumental passages. Some editing for length on these two songs and a faster pace might have improved them.

As it is, even with the two flawed songs, "Дым" is still a creditable work with an adventurous and risk-taking attitude that deserves a wider audience and better quality front-cover art. If ever listeners want a demonstration of how adaptable sludge doom can be, this album would be Exhibit A."

"What do you get when you cross a stoner doom guitar tone with classic melodic doom riffs that bookmark sluggish hardcore punk outbreaks, accompanied by black metal style vocals? Well, you get another bloody sludge album. But the latest offering from Russia’s Remote in the form of ‘Дым’ (smoke), far from being a typical modern sludge affair of basic as fuck riffs and monotone rhythms, is actually one of those “history of riffs” albums.

Although sticking with a broadly doom framework, each track jumps from style to style and era to era with little concern for the linking infrastructure required to make these tonal shifts work. Before we get too critical thought, it’s important to note the strengths of this album.

Despite the thick, Conanesque guitar tone that greets the ear in mono, with no lead or rhythm sections to open out the mix and split apart the riffs a little, Remote are energetic, moving from one idea to the next without remorse. They are also happy to shift tempos frequently, deploying any number of rhythmic tricks to keep things moving along. Their intent seems to be to create a battering ram of riffs as opposed to the usual droning of chords and slow rhythms favoured by modern stoner doom, usually intended to build a vibe but so often inducing sleep.

The distorted black metal vocals – which sometimes revert to low-end death growls – whilst blocking off a potential melodic avenue, are consistently aggressive, meeting the moment of these heavy, often punky riffs, and serve to further ‘Дым’ as an aggressive battering ram of sound.

The strong definition to the guitar tone maintains a fixed aesthetic throughout the album, but at times it is unclear where Remote stand. Making explicit and multiple tightly packed references to specific riff traditions can work as a compositional tool, but without a clear underlying thread of identity, it can often fall out of focus, leaving nothing but a series of nods to various eras of history. And for the most part Remote avoid this particular pitfall, as in the ten-minute title track for instance. The opener ‘Шлюха’ may be a little unfocused, opening with a nicely crafted melodic doom riff worthy of Pentagram, only to break into a shifting template of lacklustre stoner doom and sludge metal barrage. Whether intentional or not, the temporal whiplash this induces is a little jarring.

But as the album progresses, and competing vibes and melodic or atonal traditions surface and are settled on for longer periods the album’s underlying structure begins to take shape. The feedback drenched interlude of ‘Пепел’ is a nice way to segment the first and second half of the album, dragging out the mid-section and emphasising the re-emergence of bludgeoning energy that is ‘Гореть’, which even sees some black metal riffs make an appearance.

That being said, by the time closer ‘Гравитация’ rolls around we are back to energetic but generic sludge metal riffing which brings nothing to the table. Such moments are frequent throughout the album, but Remote usually get away with it by sandwiching these riffs between quirkier moments. Cutting this album down to thirty-minutes’ worth of material as opposed to the forty-five we get – whilst a fairly generic criticism – would have gone a long way to elevating ‘Дым’ from eyebrow raising to a genuinely fun slab of sludge metal."

"Herausfordernd ist auch der Gesang bei Remote, der dem Hardcore entliehen ist, wohingegen es sich bei der Musik eher um Stoner-Metal handelt, um Sludge mithin. Da bleibt das Trio genretreu: Sechs Stücke in einer Dreiviertelstunde, Dreivierteltakt, tiefergestimmte verzerrte Saiteninstrumente, Einsatz von Effektpedalen; da sind nicht nur die Musiker zugedröhnt, sie dröhnen die Hörerschaft ihrerseits zu. Nicht umsonst lautet der Titel des Albums „Дым“, also „Rauch“.

Der Kontrast zwischen der brüllenden Stimme und der weniger aufs Brüllen ausgerichteten Musik macht das Album natürlich erst interessant, weil: Herkömmlich kann ja jeder. Mit dem Geschrei strahlt das Trio Energie aus, die es mit der Musik wieder abfängt; die Stimme prescht nach vorn, die Musik lehnt sich zurück. Dieses Spanungsverhältnis muss man ertragen, denn lässt man sich vorrangig auf den Sludge ein, kann das Herumschreien durchaus nerven. Charmant ist wiederum, dass dieses Brüllen auf Russisch stattfindet, also einen weiteren sympathischen Kontrast darstellt für Hörer, die kein Russisch können. Und spätestens, wenn die drei dann in den klassischen Black Metal driften, weiß man, dass sie nicht nur kiffen können.

Dabei ist das offenbar Hauptsujet von Nikita, Evgeny und Sasha. Zumindest legen das Cover und Titel der früheren Alben nahe, die sie seit 2012 veröffentlichten. Irgendetwas muss sich aber um 2018 ereignet haben, danach wurden die Cover nämlich schwarz statt grün. Wie die Musik. Und wenn die vieltönnige Walze „Дым“ dann über einen hinweggefegt ist, möchte man sich dringend die Ohren freipusten."

Isto aparentemente porque mesmo quando parece que estão a fazer algo completamente diferente, sente-se o peso e a sujidade do doom metal e do sludge. Com passagens pelo noise e com violência a passar do peso apressivo dos encadeamentos mais acelerados, “Дым”, é um álbum multifacetado que consegue ser mais eficaz do que aquilo que esperaríamos inicialmente. Poderá ser mesmo um dos vossos trabalhos de eleição dentro do sludge – mesmo que o demorem a admitir.

"Vorig jaar bespraken we twee oudere albums van deze Russen, die na een digitale release een nieuw promorondje kregen. Het waren "The Great Bong Of Buchenwald" uit 2014 (waarmee de band dikke ambras kreeg met Bandcamp maar dat leest u in de review) en “The Gift” uit 2016. En hier zijn ze dan met “Дым (Dym) / Smoke”, een nagelnieuw album, opgenomen in de zomer van 2019.

Remote uit Kaluga, Rusland spelen nog altijd ultralogge stonerdoom met een fikse portie vuile, vettige sludge en elementen van noise en black. Remote is dus een zeer heavy band, opgericht in 2011 door Pavel (gitaar), Evgeny (bass, vocals) en Roman (drums). De huidige bezetting van Remote bestaat uit Evgeny (bass, vocals, synths, drone en noise), Sasha (gitaar) en Nikita (drums).

Dit derde album (6 tracks, 45 minuten) is naar eigen zeggen zo hard als een klap in je gezicht, zwaar als je kater na vrijdagavond, lawaaierig als je dronken buren en somber als de Russische winter. Dat belooft. Weinig verrassend ligt het in de lijn van de twee vorige albums. Verwacht dus weer ultralaaggestemde gitaren, slepend trage tempo’s afgewisseld met iets minder trage stukken, een smerige, morbide grunt en een overdosis cynisme en negativiteit.

“Шлюха (Shl'uha) / Whore” is een sterke opener die handelt over het bezoek van een succubus. Het begint nog vrij fatsoenlijk met (vertaald uit het Russisch met google translate) ‘Jouw betovering is de roep van demonen / Plezier vermengd met pijn / Verdomde succubus scheurt mijn huid met een scherpe naald / Bijt op je lippen tot ze bloeden / plezier, kreunen / Jij krijgt het jouwe, bitch uit de hell / obsessie, droom / Je lust neemt het over / Niemand kan bij je wegkomen / De dochter van Satan, de nakomeling van ondeugd, gehuld in duisternis.’ Maar wat later loopt het helemaal uit de hand: ‘Hoer / Spreid je benen wijder / Hoer Hoer / De kleine dood staat voor de deur / Hoer Hoer / Ik zal mijn vingers in je steken / Hoer Hoer / Bitch zuig mijn ballen / Hoer.’ Het nummer wil naar eigen zeggen de onzin aanklagen van hypocriete ‘heiligen’ (schijnheiligen dus) die hun lust en hun vuiligheid verborgen achter de legende van de succubus, die ze gebruikten als al te gemakkelijke maskerade in dienst van hun fatsoen.

“Тронут Богом (Tronut Bogom) / God-affected” sluit qua thematiek aan bij het vorige en gaat over ‘ratten’ die zich voordoen als heiligen maar enkel handelen voor hun eigen gewin. Zo kennen we er ook wel een paar…

Het meeslepende titelnummer “Дым (Dym) / Smoke” en tevens de langste track (9,5 minuten) gaat over de verbranding van een zogenaamde ketter op de brandstapel, vanuit het standpunt van de terdoodveroordeelde. Naast de grunt zit er ook een stuk gesproken tekst in. De lyrics laten zich vertalen als ‘Stalen ketenen snijden in mijn polsen / Wachten op lijden / De wereld is stil geworden / Verstikken in bijtende rook / De vieze geur van verbrande huid’ en nog meer gezelligs.

De vierde track “Пепел (Pepel) / Ash” is een buitenbeentje, geen stonerdoom voor een keer maar een gitaarloze noise/drone instrumental met drums.

Mijn favoriete track is de voorlaatste, “Гореть (Goret') / Ablaze”. Volgens de band is deze song geïnspireerd door de troosteloze straten met zielloze Chroesjtsjov blokkendozen van de Russische buitenwijken uit de jaren 90 en door forensensteden vol gebruikte spuiten en zwartgeblakerde plafonds. Of wanneer uw dealer tegelijkertijd vader, dokter en god is. De lyrics laten zich samengevat als volgt vertalen: ‘Hij verbrandde mijn aderen met universele liefde / Hij bedekte mijn lichaam samen met zweet en bloed / Hij verscheen in de schaduw samen met de geur van zwavel / Hij brak mijn lichaam met de druk van het geloof / Ik heb het honderden keren gezien in de reflecties van duizend naalden / Mijn stille schreeuw toen de voorzienigheid het overnam / Zijn luide naam op de muren van vuile ingangen / Mijn lichaam in brand / In de echo van kelders vol pis hoor ik zijn roep / Brandend, kan ik niet ademen / Ik heb mijn aderen verbrand om te sterven in deze shit / Mijn halfdode lichaam, mijn rottende wonden / Dat was zijn wil, hij wiens naam in druk staat’. Junkieverdriet, maar dan op zijn Russisch... en in deze song komt de indrukwekkende grunt het best tot zijn recht.
